COSMOPOLIS: DEMOCRATIZING GLOBAL ECONOMY AND CULTURE
An International Interdisciplinary Conference
Friday 2 - Saturday 3 June 2000, University of Helsinki, Finland
Globalisation has given rise to new critical explorations of
cosmopolitanism. In particular, in a world led by the neoliberal,
globalising revolt of the elites, is it possible to demoratise global
economy and culture? How does the universalistic counterproject of
cosmopolitan democracy look from the point of view of other cultures and
civilisations? What is the role of nationalism, new technologies and
megalopolises in the visions of global democratisation?
The Conference will bring together leading social theorists and innovatiove
political activists. Keynote speakers include Ulrich Beck, Johan Galtung
and R.B.J.Walker. It will lead to academic publications, including a
special issue of Theory, Culture & Society, and initiate a "traveling
seminar", which will organise future events with both and academic and
practical political intent.
Deadline for workshop proposals: 28 February 2000
Deadline for paper proposals: 15 March 2000.
Conference fee: £150 before 15 April 2000 (£190 thereafter; there may also
be difficulties in finding accommodation, given that Helsinki is the
European City of Culture 2000; see http://2000.hel.fi/).
